Script Call – Shorts Ideal duration: 5-10 minutes Ideal genres/tone: Drama combining humour and pathos,
psychological drama/comedy, (psychological thriller or horror),
magical realism, documentary style realism, relationship
drama/comedy. Other genres also considered. Attractive themes:
The
impossibility of communication, odd/quirky relationships
or perspectives, power struggles/clashes, death, unbreakable
bonds, passion, psychological defence and fantasy, fear,
loss, remorse, hope, survival, conquering fears and demons,
breaking free, exploring the boundaries of who we are or
what we can be. What we will be looking
for: Something that subtly and strongly engages us with the
inner drives and emotions of the leading character or characters,
including; authentic, originally observed character detail
and visual expression of a protagonist’s inner world
or point of view. A strong controlling idea for the audience
to take from the story. Use of light and shade in the tone,
i.e. featuring humour and warmth as well as pathos and the
confrontation of the darker aspects of life such as death,
suffering or loss. Elegant simplicity. Strong basic structure.
We want you to make us think and feel, laugh and cry. In
short, we’re on a hunt for script gold dust. However, we don’t expect it to be perfect straight
out of the box and will work with chosen scripts to develop
them further. If you are interested please send one page
outlines only in the first instance to: smo@scriptsurgery.co.uk,
with the words: ‘Script Call – Submission’
in the subject line. All the very best, Sarah Olley
